Timeless, limitless, filled with joy and sorrow…but always the majesty of the human condition. 9000 B.C., the rib of a giant Irish deer, an arrow mark…man’s arrival on this extraordinary little island and the beginning of his wanderings through the centuries of enchantment to follow: Celtic mythology; rich and wondrous and filled with music and songs of the minstrel; St. Patrick who brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century, creating a link with Irish mythology; Brendan the Navigator, discovering the New World; a little Gaelic poem by a young monk in a monastery in the 8th century who shared his cell with a little white cat; Brian Boru, King of Ireland in the 11th century and Emperor of the six Celtic nations: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man; the Belfast Harp Festival of 1792 where the harpers came together to preserve this wonderful, ancient music; Oscar Wilde and his extraordinary short stories…and finally, the Dublin of the 20th century with James Joyce, Sean O’Casey, Yeats, Lady Gregory, Seamus Heaney, and the continuing beauty of Irish words…and the enduring wonder of Irish music.
